Indoor humidity is healthy to a certain level (ideal humidity level should be 50%, this can be measured with a hygrometer where you can buy one from home improvement stores, or online if is more convenient for you). If you live in a home with constant moisture you are most luckily to develop health conditions, such as allergies and breathing problems. More about how humidity affects asthma can be found on this article.

Asthma is one of the most common health problems developed by indoor humidity, therefore you need to take actions asap if you want to trigger the allergies episodes.

Other than health, your household belonging can suffer drastically from damp. Furniture, electronics, shoes and clothes, everything is exposed to mould spores and you can sense that from the musty smell that covers every object from your home.

Perhaps you have ventilation in the bathroom, but that’s not enough to absorb the steam. Opening the windows will lead to fresher air, then again you cannot keep the windows open all day long.

A quick solution to lower the moisture from your house is to install an extra ventilation system, but usually, that’s very expensive and cannot be run 24/7, especially during the winter months. There are many other solutions to lower the indoor moisture, from calcium chloride dehumidifier to silica gel packs and electric dehumidifiers.

All of these can do a pretty good job, but sadly each one of them has a downside. For example, calcium chloride can cause severe irritation if touched accidentally, the same thing can happen with silica gel, see here for more details. Lastly, the electric dehumidifier is a very effective method to lower the indoor moisture and get rather of bad odour, but you need to spend a few hundred dollars if you want to get instant results and will top up your monthly energy bill quite a bit.

I’m a big fan of everything that’s natural, from food that I eat to clothes that I wear, that’s why I prefer to use plants to deal with indoor moisture. Plants are working constantly with no extra cost and are very easy to maintain, plus they can make a lovely décor in the bathroom.
