Drinking mulled wine in the winter is very common in European countries. My grandparents were preparing this spicy drink in the weekend and it was a joy to sit inside the house next to the woodstove, watching the snow and sipping slowly mulled wine made with homemade wine from the vineyard.

The mulled wine recipe back then was much simple; despite the fact, my grandmother always managed to prepare this drink deliciously enough.

Traditional Spicy Mulled wine with oranges

Traditional Spicy Mulled wine with oranges

Ingredients

for 8 servings

  • 5 cups red wine(1.2 L)
  • 1 cup of sugar(200 g)
  • 2 oranges, sliced very thin
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cloves
  • 5 black peppercorns
  • 1 small ginger root

Preparation

Add the red wine and sugar in a saucepan on a slow cooker. Whisk slowly until the sugar dissolves properly. Next, add orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, peppercorns, and ginger.

Turn the heat to high until you see that it starts to boil, then quickly remove from the heat and allow to settle for 1 minute.

Pour into mugs and garnish with fresh orange slices, or quarters. Enjoy

Cranberry & Orange Mulled Wine

Cranberry & Orange Mulled Wine

Ingredients

for 4 servings

  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1 ½ cups brandy(350 mL)
  • 1 cup cranberry juice(250 mL)
  • 5 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • ½ cup fresh cranberries(100 g)
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 oranges, thin sliced

Preparation

Add all the ingredients in a saucepan and boil for 5 minutes on low heat. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the steam to settle, then pour into mugs and garnish with quarter oranges.

Ingredients

for 6 servings

  • 10 tablespoon honey
  • 2 stars anises
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 glass brandy(240 mL)
  • 1 orange, sliced very thin
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 lime cut in quarters or slices for garnish
  • 1 bottle red wine

Preparation

We add in a large soucepan the honey, star anise, cinnamon sticks, brandy, orange slices, orange limes and wine and stir well while cooking on medium heat for about 4 minutes.

Ladle the sangria into mugs and garnish with lime slices.

Appleberry mulled wine

Ingredients

for 12 serving

  • 150ml red wine
  • 1l apple juice
  • 115g caster sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick 
  • 2 star anise
  • 3 tbsp orange Liquor
  • 3 small red-skinned apples, sliced into rings

Preparation

In a large saucepan add the wine, apple juice, the sugar, cinnamon stick and star anise. Heat gently, stirring slowly until the sugar has dissolved, then continue heating gently for another 7 minutes.

Allow to settle for 1 minute and pour into mugs garnishing with orange slices. Enjoy!

    Why did I never think of making mulled wine in the slow cooker before?! I was just wondering what to serve with my Thanksgiving feast this year. The traditional spicy mulled wine with oranges sounds perfect.
