How to make a Scandinavian star ornament tutorial
To make the Scandinavian star ornament you need just a few simple materials that can be found around the house.
- Our Scandinavian star templates (you can buy them from our Etsy shop for $5.50)
- Brown paper roll
- Scissor
- Hot glue, or any other glue
- A4 paper (27 sheets), or you can use roll craft paper
- A piece of thread for making the hanger
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread to connect all the paper parts
If you want to skip the glue part, you can use a basic stapler ( the disadvantage of using a stapler to connect the paper piece is that the metal staples will be visible, while the glue will be hidden from the visual). If you prefer you can watch the video tutorial on our YouTube channel CreativeGiantHands here is the video tutorial for Swedish paper star.
Let’s start making this beautiful Scandinavian advent star:
Step 1.
I’ve used brown paper, to make this Scandinavian star decoration, but you can choose your own color, or make the star with 2 or 3 different colors at once.

Fold the paper in half

Draw the shape of the star now. To speed up this process, I recommend to get our templates from our etsy shop. Once you have the templates, you can place them on paper, trace the shape of the template into your paper and from there you will need to cut the shape out.
Now basically you have the paper pattern and you just need to glue them together. Further down you can follow the step-by-step process, to make the perfect Scandinavian Christmas star.

Draw the shape on the other side of the paper so it will be easier to cut it

This is the pattern of the Scandinavian paper star

Now we start folding it until it becomes like an accordion.

Repeat the process until you create 9 pieces of paper

Make hole in it so that the thread can be inserted to connect 9 pieces together as shown next. use a metal hole puncher to make a hole at the bottom of the paper.

Step 2.
Now we will join the ends of all 9 pieces and seal them with glue.

See the pictures below of how your paper star should look like:
- Make sure to create an even circle in the middle of the star
2. Use a sewing needle to cross the thread through all the holes in the paper

Once you added all the paper parts, tie the thread so it won’t open, then glue the end parts of the paper.

Step 3.
The first layer of the Scandinavian paper star is ready, now we will make the second and third. Basically, we need 9 pieces in big size, then 9 pieces in medium size, and 9 pieces in small size to place them all on top of each other to achieve the 3D effect.
We need 3 different sizes of patterns to create this Scandinavian paper wreath as shown in the image below

Since we have already made a bigger size Star (1stlayer). The process of making the second and third stars is the same. For the second layer of paper, I just haven’t used tread, only hot glue. If you want, you can do the same process as in 1stlayer star to make it sturdier. Depending on how thick your paper is.
Step 4.

Use strong glue to line all the paper parts

The second layer star is ready. Similarly, we will also make the 3rd small-size paper star.
Step 5.
Now we will make the third smallest star following the same process as the second one.

Step 6.
Use glue to place the round base on top of the paper star so we can create the 3D star layer. The round base is for supporting the base of the star not falling apart each layer of the star( see the video tutorial to understand better the process). Repeat the process with the other 3 Swedish paper stars and you are almost done.

Your Swedish paper star should look fluffy and have a 3D effect now.

Now that we glued all the 3 stars together, turn it over and add a thick thread for hanging it. First, you need to cut a round shape of paper to create the base where you will place the hanging thread. Glue the paper on the back of the star, then add the thread on top of the round paper and use strong glue to attach it.
After you placed the hanging thread on the round paper, add glue on the entire surface of the round paper and place the second layer of the paper to create a nice finish and to seal the hanging thread. Follow the steps shown in the pictures below.
